You can borrow books, study, and print at all libraries. You can also access a lot of electronic books and journals from home. This page tells you more about how this works, and about other practical matters that may be good to know when you start using the library.

Borrow books and journals

The GU card doubles as your library card. Borrow your books at the automated check-out points at the library. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you have left your GU card elsewhere, you can log into My loans using your student account, and access your barcode for use at the check-out. Borrowing materials from the university library is free of charge, just like in the Swedish public libraries.

Apply for the GU card via the GU card portal and then pick your card up at one of Service center locations. If you haven't had time to obtain a GU card at the start of the semester, we will help you borrow the books you need at the information desk. In such cases, please bring some form of ID!

For distance students: If you are enrolled in a distance course and live outside the municipality of Gothenburg, you can have books sent to your home address. Read more about how to use the library as a distance student on the library's website.

Rules for borrowing books

The following rules apply when borrowing textbooks:

2 weeks loan period (other books: 30 days)
Late fee will be added for delayed returns (see the link below for more info)
You will receive reminders about your loans via e-mail (student e-mail) or text (can be added on My Loans)

For students with reading disabilities, the loan period for textbooks is 30 days. Students with reading disabilities need a certificate from the university co-ordinators, in order to be granted extended loan periods. Visit the Student Portal for co-ordinator contact details.

My loans - Get an overview and renew your loans

The Start page of the library's website has a feature called My loans. Log in here with your student account for an overview of the library materials you have currently checked out, and the items you have requested. Here you can renew all your loans, provided no one else has put the material on hold.

Reading and borrowing digital resources

Borrow digital resources, such as e-books and e-journal articles, by using your student account details to log into the library's Supersearch service and gain access to digital material when outside the university premises. Just like printed material, borrowing or downloading digital material is free of charge.

All our branches have a variety of study areas. Several libraries have quiet reading rooms, group study rooms and reading studios.

Group study rooms are available at all our libraries. Reserve yours via the library web site. Use your student account to make a reservation.

For those with a reading disability, there are reading studios, available for individual studies. These rooms offer various technical aids. Make your reservation via the library's website using your GU card. You will also find our phone numbers on this site, if you would rather call to make a reservation. In order for you to be authorized to book a reading studio, as well as other enhanced services, you need a certificate from the university co-ordinators. Co-ordinators can be contacted via the Student Portal.

Print, scan, and copy

To print, scan, or copy material - you first need to upload credit to your GU card. Instructions on how to do this can be found through the Student Portal. Use your GU card and your four-digit PIN code to log in to our printers. Our reading studios are equipped with their own printers and scanners. If you have been given access to a reading studio, you don't have to upload any credit.

Didn't bring your GU card?

If you did not bring your GU card with you, you can log in using your student account details. Select "Do not have a card" on the printer screen menu.

Wifi and computers

Using your own computer

To access the university Wifi, connect to the Eduroam university network using your student account details. Eduroam is free to use. Further instructions can be found through the Student Portal.

Using the library computers

Stationary computers are available at all our libraries. Log in using your student account. On each library's information page, you can check the number of computers available at each library.
