Dear all,

I am happy to greet you to the first of the three lectures that I will be with you. We are going to discuss the written sources of our knowledge about Viking Age and early medieval Scandinavia. This class will consist of two parts:

an hour-long lecture;
a half-an-hour classwork.

The lecture consists of three blocks with shorter 5–7-minute breaks between them (that is if you're watching it during the class on September 28th from 9:15 to 11:00; if you're watching it beforehand, manage your time as you please).

The classwork will consist of reading in groups and a discussion afterwards. You will be divided into two groups and given two texts that describe the same events. You will be asked to ponder on certain questions that historians have to deal with. Thereafter we will try to consolidate our opinions in a general discussion.

The videos (you will need to click the link, it will open then on the GU play website), classwork texts, and slides (never mind the last slide) have been uploaded in the corresponding module. If you get the time to skim through the texts for classwork, that will expedite your in-group discussion on Monday, but this is not required per se.

It will be open from 9:00 a.m. on September 28th, but until 10:30 you will be working on your own. You are expected to show up no later than 10:30 so that I can greet you all and assign you groups.
