Entry requirements
For admission to the course, the doctoral student has to be registered as student in the third cycle.
Learning outcomes
After completed course the student should be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- Explain and relate to key themes and issues within the research field of child and youth studies.
- Discuss and critically relate to some of the field's central concepts and theories.
Competence and skills
- Using different theoretical perspectives and methods in relation to children's and relate this knowledge to their own thesis.
Judgement and approach
- Critically valuing theoretical, methodological and analytical implications of different approaches to analyse and understand childhood and adolescence.
- Discuss the ethical issues that arise when studying children and adolescents.
Contents
The aim of the course is to give an overarching and basic introduction to the research field of Child and Youth Studies. International research into this field is discussed and related to the Swedish educational system. The course includes a variety of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches in relation to policy issues and ideological perspectives on conditions for the development children and youth. The course is based on four themes of conditions for children’s and adolescents’ development and identity formation: Learning, Institutions, Media, and Globalization. The theme of learning focuses on the perspectives of children and the young themselves. The theme institutions concerns children’s and young people’s conditions for development, learning and identity formation within the frames of different kinds of schooling. The theme media focuses on questions concerning how children and young people use and perceive social media and how media influence their everyday life and learning. Finally, the theme globalization revolves around multi-cultural issues, ethnicity, gender, and class in change as well as the consequences and possibilities of globalizing processes.

Assessment
The course concludes with a written assignment in the form of a paper or an essay, where the student discusses and problematizes the nature of children’s and young people’s conditions for development and identity formation in relation to the four themes of the course, that is, learning, institutions, media, and globalization. The purpose is to give an overarching picture of the field of child and youth studies.
A number of questions constitute the overarching interest of the four domains of knowledge covered in the course. These questions are:
- What characterizes the research field of Child and Youth Studies?
- How do Child and Youth Studies relate to Pedagogy and Pedagogical Work?
- What constitutes children’s and adolescents’ conditions for development and identity formation with regards to:
- Learning
- Institutions
- Media
- Globalization
- What characterises contemporary research on learning, institutions, media and globalisation?
- What important results exist with bearing on these four themes?
- What theoretical tools do researchers today use in conducting studies into these themes and what methods are employed in producing scientific knowledge?
- What conclusions can be drawn concerning on the basis of this contemporary strand of research?
The student is expected to be able to show in the assignment that he or she is can analyze and discuss child and youth studies in terms of the goals of the course and the course literature. If possible, the student may relate the paper or essay to his or her own research interest. The text is expected to be about five to six pages (Times New Roman, 12p) including references.
Grading scale
The grading scale comprises the grades Pass (G), Fail (U).
Course Evaluation
The results will be communicated to the students and will function as a guide for further development of the course.
