Course syllabus
Welcome to the course "Variationist sociolinguistics" 7.5 hec.
The course deals with different types of language variation from a sociolinguistic perspective. Taking its starting-point in the work of William Labov and other early pioneers, it gives a survey of important theories, materials and methods within this discipline, focusing in particular on the effects of the variables class, sex and age. A discussion is also maintained of the importance of variationist studies for the development of empirical work within linguistics in general. As a central part of the course, students will find a project involving individual fieldwork, where they are required to collect their own empirical data, analyse them and present their results in a course-final essay.
Given below is some important documentation relating to the course -- the course syllabus and the literature list.
The course will start in week 6 (cf. "Course summary below"). For a detailed study plan, a list of important deadlines and details of the written assignment, turn to "Modules" and "Assignments" respectively in the menu on the left.
