Dear students,

as you have already heard, Oman is unfortunately out of reach this year due to the ongoing Corona crisis. In fact, Oman was on the top of the infection rate list for quite some time. As I am pushing as hard as I can to offer you some extensive field exposure (I believe several dozens of field days are paramount for any geoscience education!) in the framework of GV4000, the safest bet for conducting a corona-conform field trip this year seems to be Germany!

Given the statistics and the ongoing policies, it is actually safer for you to be in Germany than staying in Gothenburg ;) Besides, Germany as a geoscience destination makes a lot of sense! It has a wide range of geologic highlights to offer (Variscan and Alpine orogeny, Mesozoic intracratonic sedimentation, one of the top meteor craters, rift vulcanism, etc) that interestingly complement Scandinavian geology (the action here stopped when it only got started in Germany). There are plenty more reasons I will tell you later.

As I said, Germany is the safest bet for a field trip abroad; in fact perhaps the only remaining reasonable option. Having said that, I still will have to implement a series of strict  corona-related rules. It starts that it is law in Germany that people wear masks in confined public spaces and ends that I am at least considering to ask you for self-imposed isolation for the days before the start of the field trip. You will learn more about it in the coming weeks, but lets be clear about this topic: it is not(!) about what risks you are willing to take yourself, it is about the group: if only one person tests positive during the trip, it will be the end of the trip. Simple as that.

What is important now is that I get a reliable overview of who is on board?? Ideally I would have 5-10 participants, up to 15 might be possible. Finding suitable accommodation under those circumstances is one of the big challenges for me in the near future. I am aiming for 14-20 days of field trip within Germany by car, during the second half of October into beginning of November (weather may be absolutely superb to downright miserable- but not worse than in Gothenburg this time of year...). Please let me know if you are willing to drive on the German Autobahn! I will not put many people in each car, so we need plenty of drivers. Not sure if we rent the cars in Gothenburg (safer in relation to corona-risks) or travel by train to Germany (environmentally more friendly).

If you commit for this course, I will commit that you get a comprehensive education in German geology. In the worst case (like a positive corona case) we will have to do it in Gothenburg via seminars and exercises. But this is only(!) the backup plan.

Please let me know what your state of mind is right now: 1) definitely yes!!, 2) I do have more questions or 3) I rather do another online course. Please also inform your friends, colleagues about this information. As I said, I do need to have solid information as soon as possible, and not(!) beginning of October.

Greetings, Thomas

Schema (Schedule)  this will be taken up when we have a new destination

a general typical schedule regardless of destination:

      1. Early meeting (start of term) to confirm who is interested to travel and  organize a bit. I will be in touch so be sure to be admitted to the class soon, so I know who is interested.

       2. Course starts with a series of lectures, seminars, and travel preparation.

       3. Actual field trip and associated travel

       4. Time back in Gothenburg to complete analysis and project work.

Kursplan (syllabus) in Swedish

The English syllabus is found under files, GV4000 Excursion course ENG.

Literature list will also be provided when we have a location.
